Along with crocheting a hat and four headbands this weekend, I also managed to crochet this cute little owl. I think I enjoy crocheting these sort of things much more than wearable items, so I think I'll be making more of 'em. Maybe a dinosaur (preferably a brontosaurus/apatosaurus) or a whale next? We'll see. :)
It took a while to make the owl, but it was actually pretty easy. I tried to follow a pattern, but that didn't work so I did it differently. First, I made a magic loop/ring (you can find the tutorial for that on Youtube) and made seven single crochets into the center. Instead of making multiple rows, I just crocheted in rounds, but making a mark of where I started. I then increased by making fourteen single crochets into the seven I already had (two in each sc). From there, I increased more (but less gradually) by adding two single crochets every other time, then every other-other time, and so on, until I had 1 single crochet for eight times, and then two single crochets.
Does that make sense? I'm not very good at making (or following) patterns. Basically, it was like making a very small hat and then sewing on felt/button features, stuffing it and finally sewing the top closed. Click here for a crochet hat tutorial that's really simple.
Also, I've decided to put the owl on my Etsy shop, Essential Handmades.
Check it out if you're so inclined. Have a wonderful week everybody!
Love, Liz

Can you do a a crocheting for beginners tutorial? (like the tools and materials you would need and the basic gist of crocheting) :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to Emily! ..But I'm not very good at explaining things. :/ I was thinking about writing an ebook for awhile there for all of my crocheting, but I feel it would take up too much of my time. I will try my best to do a step-by-step tutorial with pictures next time. Sound good?

Oh the cuteness, i will have to crochet a whole nest full of them and make them fuzzy.... if you wanted to make them slighty fuzzy all you would have to do is crochet them like normal, then take a dog slicker brush (avalaible at pet stores) and brush the whole thing so that some of the yarn fibers fluff up. There you have it! Easy fluffy owl chicks!
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds awesome! I might have to try that. Thanks for the tip.

Oh that would be really cute! I would love to attempt one; no promises in producing a blog-worthy final project though! ;)

Aw, what a cute little creation! When it comes to sewing, knitting, crocheting and really anything else crafty, I'm pretty hopeless, but I love the idea of being able to make this guy :)

Thanks Cee! But really, sewing and etc. is not that hard! It takes a lot of practice, but it's definitely do-able.
