Liz makes a fringed boho kimono

Lately I've been obsessed with bohemian-looking kimonos and ponchos and capes. My pinterest boards are full of 'em! I've been wanting to make one for a week or so but I haven't been able to go to the fabric store. Today, while I was getting dressed, I saw this skirt that I never ever wear. I decided I could easily make my own kimono out of it. So I did!

So let's get started. Here's my skirt with the elastic already cut off. Of course, if you don't have a skirt you're willing to cut up for a project, you can buy some fabric in a fun print. I don't really think it matters the type of fabric, as long as it drapes nicely. So a jersey fabric would work, or in this case, I used a chiffon-type material from the skirt.
If you're using a skirt like I did, cut the hem off.
Now cut your skirt into four equal panels. If you're using fabric, you'll need about 1 1/4 yards total. Each panel will be 11 inches by 45 inches. The size really doesn't matter that much. You just make it how big you want to make it.
From here on, a few of the instructions will be animated because it was really hard to take pictures of the process. I think that was due to the wild print. You can't really tell which panel is which panel from the original pictures. Anyway, so here are your four panels in animated form.
You'll need to sew panels 1 & 2 together and 3 & 4 together. You do this by putting right sides together and sewing a straight line.
Now you are left with two long panels. Place the panels right side together and sew from the tops of panels 1 & 3 to the tops of panels 2 & 4. This is the back of the kimono.
Fold the giant rectangle in half, right sides together. Now you're going to sew the sides. Leave a gap open big enough for your arms to fit through. I made really big arm holes because I like the drape-y look.
Now you're going to work on the bottom. Cut 1/2" strips in order to make fringe.
Tie each one into a knot so it looks more polished.
I think it turned out really cute! And the best part... it only took a few minutes!
I love the way it flows and drapes. It's so fun to twirl in it!
Have a great week everybody! I start my last year of business school next Monday. I'm hoping I won't be too busy, but we'll find out I guess. Until next time!
Love, Liz
