Ever since I watched The Help, I wanted to make Minny's Chocolate Pie. If you've ever seen The Help, you already know that this pie played a huge role in the film. There's a part where Minny bakes this pie for a horribly rude lady and adds a special ingredient. My recipe has no "terrible awful" ingredient, but feel free to add it at your own discretion if there's a Two-Slice-Hilly in your life.
You'll need:
1 packaged dough pie crust
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 large eggs, beaten
3/4 cup evaporated milk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
Whipped cream, for serving
I made this recipe exactly from Food and Wine, who got their recipe from the lady who actually made the pies for the movie. It tastes pretty darn good to me!
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
First, lay out your pie crust in your pie pan, crimp the edges and poke a few holes in the bottom with a fork.
Place some foil over the crust and throw some dry beans (or pie weights) on top. You'll probably need more than you see here. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for 5 more minutes, just until the crust is dry, but not browned.
Meanwhile, whisk your sugar, cocoa powder, butter, eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla and salt together in a bowl. Mix until no lumps remain.
Pour into your pie crust and bake for about 45 minutes or until set around the edges, but still a little jiggly in the center.
Let the pie cool completely before cutting. Serve with whipped cream.
This pie was incredibly easy to make and equally delicious. It had a very fudge-like taste and texture and the whipped cream really brought it home.
Have a great weekend everybody!
Love, Liz
I still can't stop thinking about that scene ever since I saw the movie, so gross! But this looks so good!
ReplyDeleteYou know, this is probably the best dessert I have ever made. No joke!
