A long time ago on Pinterest, I saw these freaking adorable crocheted beards. A couple of days ago, I remembered the pin and thought "hey, I can do that." So I worked from memory and made something that sort of resembled a beard. I made the brown one as a test run and then made the tan one to blog about. Unfortunately, I accidentally erased all of the pictures I took of the tutorial process, but fortunately for you, I made the orange one, took pictures of the process and didn't erase them! Let's get started. Hopefully I can explain this to make it as easy as possible.
First you'll need to chain 30. I'm using a G hook.
Single crochet in the second stitch from the hook and continue down the row. When you're at the end, chain one and turn.
Now you're going to single crochet in the first two stitches and then make a bobble stitch. If you remember from the bobble-stitch clutch, I taught how to make that stitch. Here's a refresher...
1. Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop.
2. Yarn over, draw through first two loops on the hook. You should have two loops on your hook now.
3. Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop.
4. Yarn over, draw through first two loops on the hook. You should have three loops on your hook now.
5. Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop.
6. Yarn over, draw through first two loops on the hook. You should have four loops on your hook now.
7. Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop.
8. Yarn over, draw through first two loops on the hook. You should have five loops on your hook now.
9. Yarn over, draw through all five loops on hook.
10. Single crochet in the next stitch.
So on this row, you'll single crochet, bobble crochet, single crochet, bobble crochet, etc.
Chain one and turn.
The bobble stitch will always be done on the back of your work. So this means that you'll have to alternate every row with a row of single crochet. So after you just finished these 10 steps on a whole row, you'll have to single crochet across the entire row. The bobble stitches may look longer than the single crochet stitches, but you still only need to single crochet into them once.
Now make two single crochets in the first two stitches and then do a bobble stitch. Do your bobble/single crochet alternate until you have four bobbles and then a single crochet. Now chain 9.
Now single crochet the end of the chain at the eighth stitch from the last single crochet.
Now make the bobbles and single crochet alternate until the rest of the row. The last two stitches should be single crochets to be consistent.
Chain one and turn. Single crochet across the whole row. Chain one and turn.
Now you're going to do the same exact thing you did earlier. Two single crochets, followed by the alternate bobble stitch and single crochet and two single crochets in the last two stitches. Chain one and turn. Single crochet across the whole row.
Now you'll need to make another row of bobble/single stitch alternate. Chain one and turn. Single crochet across the whole row. When you get to the end, chain 20.
Attach with a single crochet. Single crochet across the row and when you get to the end, chain another 20.
(I forgot to take a picture of the next step, but you'll attach the chain to the other corner with a single crochet. Tie off and hide your ends.)
The little loops go around your ears like this. How fun is that?!
I think the brown one is my favorite! :)
I'm also selling them on my Etsy shop, Essential Handmades, if you're interested!
Have a great week!
