Liz makes a crocheted owl tablet case

Today, I was sitting in class thinking, "why have I never attempted the crocodile stitch before?" And then that got me to think that the stitch would be perfect for an owl body. A couple of Google searches later, and I figured that idea wasn't totally original. Boo, oh well. However, I thought, "why not make it into a tablet case?" and this little owl tablet case was born. I think it's down right adorable. Here's a tutorial so you can make one too:
Make nine (or however many you fancy) rows of crocodile stitches. This stitch is also called the shingle stitch or the scale stitch. I am in no way talented enough to teach this stitch, so here's a video
After that, I made enough rows of single crochet stitches until I was satisfied with the height. I ended up with eleven.
After you're done with your last row of single crochet stitches, chain one and turn. Triple crochet in the first two stitches, double crochet in the next two stitches and single crochet in the rest of the stitches until you reach the fourth to the last stitch. In that stitch and the next one, you'll double crochet and in the last two stitches, you'll triple crochet. Fasten off and weave in your ends. This makes little owl-like ears.
Now we're going to make the eyes of the owl. First, make a magic circle and single crochet seven into the center. Slip stitch to make a complete circle.
Chain one. Single crochet in every stitch. Slip stitch to make ends meet.
Chain one. In every other stitch, single crochet twice. Otherwise, single crochet once.
Same thing as the last step. Chain one. In every other stitch, single crochet twice. Otherwise, single crochet once.
Make two of these round circles in a contrasting color from the body of your owl. I also made a little beak. To do this, I just made a little triangle the same way you would make a square, except I never chained a stitch before turning.
I just sewed these facial features on with some simple white sewing thread. As you can tell, I also added some silver buttons in the middle of the eyes to act as pupils.
At this point, I made the back. I simply chain stitched until I got the width I wanted, and single crocheted in rows until I got the height I wanted. To make the little owl-like ears match, I did exactly what I did before on the front piece.

Put the back piece and the front piece wrong sides together and single crochet the two pieces together. Make sure to leave the top open so you can put a tablet into it!
And now you're done!
Looks pretty good!
I'm selling this cute little owl on my Etsy shop if you're interested!
Love, Liz
